Attending Henley Women’s Regatta wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Crewroom stand in the retail village. Crewroom has been supporting British Women’s Rowing since 2001 and this event is one we truly get excited about. Competitors and spectator’s love to visit us every year, exploring our new collections and meeting our fantastic team. This summer we’ve created stunning pieces for inspirational women.
Henley Women’s Regatta is the premiere regatta for women in the UK and attracted over 1500 rowers in 2018 with entries from all over the globe. HWR 2018 marked their 31st anniversary and, luckily, the sun shone all weekend for this quintessential regatta.
The event has changed dramatically since the first regatta held in June 1988. Today, more than 40% of the country’s active registered rowers are female. A stark contrast to the early 1960’s where the total number of oarswomen in England was less than 1000.
Over the years, the sport of women’s rowing has matured and changes have included the direction of the course, the size and number of the races, the participation of international crews and qualification rules. HWR continues to grow, as does the level of competition.
Notably in 1987, Women’s National Coach, Rosie Mayglothing – winner of the Invitation double sculls at Henley 1982 with her partner Astrid Ayling – suggested women should organise their own Henley Regatta.
Through sheer persistence Mayglothing and Christine Aistrop convinced the Stewards of HRR to give permission for the first women’s regatta to be held on the course in June 1988, albeit with certain provisos.
Here at Crewroom we salute the women who’ve worked tirelessly over the last 30 years to make Henley Women’s Regatta what it is today.
